A 1989 Alfa Romeo 75 V6 3.0 Veloce famously driven by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear will be auctioned at Iconic Auctioneers’ inaugural Classic Sale at the Silverstone Festival on 24 August.

Purchased for just £450 as part of a challenge to buy an Alfa Romeo for less than £1000, the 75 was driven by Clarkson in episode 3, series 11 of the BBC show, which aired on 6 July 2008.

It featured prominently in a series of tests, including a track day at Rockingham Motor Speedway, a calendar photo shoot and the Auto Italia Stanford Hall Concours. To prepare it for the concours, Clarkson personally repainted the car in a vivid hue he dubbed ‘Skoda Green‘ – a look it still largely retains today.

The 75 is powered by Alfa's famous 3.0-litre Busso V6 engine, which Clarkson described as ‘one of the best engines ever to go into mass production.’

Since its Top Gear appearance, the car has been maintained over 11 years by its current owner, with around £4500 invested in its mechanical upkeep. Recent work includes a cam belt service, new clutch and gearbox rebuild. With just over 51,000 miles, it comes complete with original handbooks, service stamps, MOT history and replacement body panels for those considering a return to original spec. It's expected to fetch between £12,000 and £15,000.

This Alfa Romeo 75 is an enjoyable and quirky piece of Top Gear history,” said Rob Hubbard, managing director and principal auctioneer at Iconic Auctioneers. “It’s ideal for those who appreciate characterful cars with an engaging backstory.”

There are a couple of things to point out, like the fact that the MOT expired in 2017 and it was declared a Category ‘C’ insurance loss in 2001. You could send it for an MOT test and ask yourself ‘what's the worst that could happen?’ as you sit in the waiting room...

The sale takes place during the Silverstone Festival, a major fixture on the historic motorsport calendar, drawing over 90,000 visitors. Alongside the Classic Sale, Iconic Auctioneers will also host collectors’ cars (23 August), motorcycles (22 August) and two automobilia sales.
