Five 1980s hot hatches fetch record prices at classic sale

Five hot hatchbacks of the 1980s set new world-records for a live auction at a recent sale at the Classic Car & Restoration Show held at the NEC in Birmingham. If these hot hatches are anything to go by, the classic car market is showing no signs of cooling off.

In fairness, they were excellent examples of some of the most desirable hot hatchbacks of the decade, including a ‘big bumper’ Mk2 Golf GTI 16v in Oak Green, albeit one that was registered in 1990. Fast Fords are almost guaranteed to achieve high prices at auction, so it's no surprise that a Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 2 with just 5673 miles on the clock fetched a huge sum. Almost enough to buy a new Alpine A110, which makes you think, doesn't it?

Rob Hubbard, managing director and principal auctioneer at Iconic Auctioneers, said: “The Classic Sale was a glorious celebration of the many forms a classic car can take in today's marketplace. The strong results seen at the auction are testament to our commitment to making classic car ownership straightforward and enjoyable for all, connecting buyers and sellers at every level with a trustworthy, personal approach. With cars from the ’80s and ’90s continuing to enjoy high demand in the market, now is a great time to sell these modern classics.”

Here are the famous five hot hatchbacks from The Classic Sale:

1989 Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 2: £50,625

  • Did we mention it's a Fast Ford?

1990 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16v: £37,688

  • It was treated to a 5.5-year bare-metal restoration
  • It has won multiple concours awards

1988 Fiat Uno Turbo i.e.: £30,375

Three reasons why it fetched such a high price:

  • It has been fully recommissioned by a Fiat dealer
  • Try finding another one as good as this

1989 Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider: £25,875

Three reasons why it fetched such a high price:

  • It's tastier and healthier than eating Fridge Raiders
  • The previous owner spent up to £20,000 on it
  • The Raider was the run-out edition of this iconic hot hatch

1985 Fiat Strada Abarth 130 TC: £20,250

Three reasons why it fetched such a high price:

  • The Strada Abarth was a proper, unhinged hot hatch
  • The 1995cc twin-cam ‘Lampredi’ four-pot is a peach
  • It's described as ‘the best UK-supplied Strada Abarth available today’

Eighty-five percent of the lots at the Iconic Auctioneers Classic Sale found a home, with the auction surpassing £2.5 million in total. The auction house's next sale will be the Classic Sale at Wheeler Dealer Live on 1 June at Bicester Heritage. ’old out yer hand, you've got yerself a deal...
