Shednesday: Hyundai V6 saloons
South Korean luxobarges are the order of the week, as Ben Carter picks a selection of wonderful Hyundai V6 saloons. Waft-tastic!
Merry Shednesday. As I promised (threatened?) last week, I'm focusing on Hyundai V6 saloons.
These days, your options start at the £20,000 Genesis or you could spend around a quarter of that on an older fourth-generation Grandeur. Grandeurs like that one used to be available for £2000 or less, but these days you'll have to look elsewhere for options on a budget.
Nearly a Grandeur
For £1998, you could have this 3.3-litre Sonata. The Grandeur is essentially a larger version of the Sonata and they have the same interior and engine. As with all Hyundai V6 saloons it has an auto box. This example has got an MOT until April, has covered only 73,000 miles and is in Birmingham. While I know the cream leather interior is impractical, it does combine nicely with the burgundy exterior. Insurance may also be better on the Sonata versus the Grandeur.
An older dog
For less money, lower mileage but sadly a smaller engine, you could have this 2.7-litre Sonata. It’s advertised at £1650, has had one former keeper and also has a new MOT. Of the various options this is admittedly my least favourite, mainly due to the front-end appearance. Although to counter my objections, how often do you really look at the front of your car?
My favourite
For the lowest miles of the bunch, but still a 3.0-litre V6, you could have my favourite: this £1200 XG30. The XG30 was essentially a third-generation Grandeur. Our car is from 2002, it has an MOT until February 2022, has done 38,000 miles and is in Shrewsbury. It does have some bodywork issues but then it’s a cheap old car.
Non-Hyundai options
If you’re looking for a cheap luxobarge but have an aversion to Hyundai, some good alternatives would be this London-based £895 Nissan Maxima (note the gearbox issues) with an MOT, or this £1500 Lexus LS 430 in Barnsley (read full ad to note issues).

To be honest, Ben, I'm struggling to focus this morning. It could be down to the 3.06am alarm call on Tuesday, or the 550-mile round trip, but in truth, it's about the Kia Pride. I managed to grab a drive in one at a media day (review to follow), but the really big news is the presence of an original whitewall tyre in the boot! It deserves World Heritage status.
Having said all of that, this ranks as one of my favourite Shednesday updates. Although my heart is set on buying a Proton Impian, my head could be turned by a Sonata, XG30 or Grandeur. Great picks, Ben. You've done PetrolBlog proud!
