I can’t stop looking at signs directing me to the airport
When was the last time you studied the aircraft icon displayed on British road signs? The chances are, you've never really given it a second thought, but from this point onwards, you'll never look at it the same way again.
Last year, I discovered that it works like an arrow, pointing in the direction of the nearest airport. How have I managed to get to my age without knowing this?

Sure, the official government document states that the aircraft symbol indicates the route to an airport, but did you know that it will also point you in the right direction?
I certainly didn't, and now I can't stop looking out for airport signs whenever I'm let out of the house for good behaviour. It's like the FedEx arrow – once you've seen it, you can't stop staring at it.
Or, maybe that’s just me.
Permission to land
Thanks to the ever-excellent Roads.org.uk, I also found out that the plane symbol isn’t allowed to turn below horizontal because it looks like it’s crashing. Just imagine the government meetings that would have taken place before this was agreed.
And you thought road signs were boring.
Actually, you read PETROLBLOG, so you definitely don’t find road signs boring. You probably have a thing for exciting motorway slip roads, former but now bypassed trunk roads, and old Little Chef buildings, too.
Just me again? Thought so.
Are there other road sign ‘Easter eggs’ I don’t know about? Answers on the back of the postcard to the usual address, please. Equally, if you find a sign that isn’t pointing in the right direction – and not for the reason outlined above – get in touch with your local MP.
In the meantime, I’m off to write something on the new Suzuki Jimny.
