A 1990 Citroën 2CV6 Spécial with just 557 miles on the clock has sold for £22,500 at auction. An extravagant price for a basic car that would have cost £4,161 in November 1990, the equivalent of £10,000 today.
By then, you either bought a Citroën 2CV for its quirkiness or its price. Five years earlier, when testing a 2CV Spécial alongside a Lada Riva, Reliant Rialto and Skoda Estelle, CAR said: ‘As a four-door saloon it still does a fair job of housing four adults, though the lack of shoulder width requires that they may be friends. The equipment and trim is no more than adequate; the Spécial merely has the basics any car needs to function and that is all. Decor is simply non-existent.’
It was, if you like, the Dacia Sandero Access of its day: basic, cheap and unpretentious. Unsurprisingly, it won the group test, with CAR praising its ‘lack of pretension’, before adding that ‘you warm to it’.
One buyer was so charmed by the 2CV6 Spécial, he bought one for his daughter. Nothing remarkable about that, until you discover that the daughter was just six. The plan was to keep it until her 21st birthday, which will explain why it has covered just 557 miles since it was delivered new in August 1990 by a Citroën dealer in Somerset.
According to Iconic Auctioneers, the girl, a former athlete and now a sports journalist, enjoyed a brief ride in the car, which remained ‘wrapped in cotton wool’ until she turned 21. A canny investment on her dad's part and a good piece of business for her. If Petrolblog did Child Trust Funds...
