Gritter lorry overturns in Devon

Gritter lorry overturns in Lydford, Devon

In the early hours of Saturday morning, while most of us were tucked up in bed, Devon’s gritter lorries were out clearing our roads. Sadly one of these lorries fell foul of the worsening conditions and the result can be seen in the pictures. The incident occurred on the hill beween Lydford village and Lydford Gorge and seemingly the driver did a brilliant job to avoid careering all the way down the hill and on to the bridge that crosses the Gorge. The results of the lorry crashing through the bridge are unthinkable.

Spare a thought for these chaps as they work throughout the night to keep our roads clear. Working on their own in some treacherous conditions, they deserve a medal. They’ve got families too remember. Fortunately the driver was fine, but rather shocked.

Blimey, take it driver is ok. Some traction from the recovery to get it back up again though

Yep, driver is fine. He did brilliantly to avoid a bigger disaster. Going to be quite some time before the road is cleared though.

Having seem that hill first hand, I’m not surprised something like this happened. Glad the driver was okay and hope he didn’t take a look over the bridge after the incident at what could have been. He’d have a few sleepless nights I can tell you….

Indeed. I think we’d be discussing a completely different incident had the lorry reached the bottom of the hill. Doesn’t bear thinking about…
