Perfect Dub: VW MK1 Scirocco
Has there ever been a Volkwagen that can rival the beautiful simplicity of the MK1 Scirocco? I think not. We we ever see anything like it again? Again, I think not.

I agree that the first Scirocco designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro was pure concept. I had two of these first Scirocco’s
The Giugiaro Scirocco did share the chassis of the Golf I but most every part of the car was re-engineered in favor of a sporty-drive, and the model’s all-new styling.
Interesting..if you remove the VW grill tag the profile shows the Giugiaro styling. At that time Giugiaro had designed the Alfa Romeo Caimano and several other Alpha’s that had the steep windshield rake (or wedge shape) that was carried over to the Scirocc
…Another good example is the 1973 Audi Karmann Asso di Picche (ItalDesign)
Interesting VW has now bought the controlling shares of stock of the design studio owned by Giorgetto Giugiaro

Thanks for commenting Don. I’ll admit to be slightly envious that you’ve owned two of Volkswagen’s finest model. The closest I came to owning one was when I stumbled across a Storm for £300 in the New Forest. Unfortunately, being a student at the time I couldn’t get insurance for less than £3k, so I didn’t get it. Looking back, I should have just bought it anyway, but hindsight’s a wonderful thing.

I had a performance and import shop in Newport Beach Calif. and another one in Fort Lauderdale Florida.. The German cars were most of my
customers. I operated these shops from 1980-1986
So it was just natural to drive VW’s and Porsche’s and even Bimmers.

The mark 1 Scirocco was so good that a good friend of mine, who ‘doesn’t do crying’, shed tears when it was stolen from outside his workplace. Sadly, he never did get it back.
As for the Asso di Picche, I reckon that it’s the sort of car that Ed Straker would have driven. And, yes, that is praise.
