Citroen CX shows its Grace

by Gavin Braithwaite-Smith

Grace Jones. Famous, as far as Petrolblog goes, for three things.

One, her starring role in the 1985 James Bond film, a View to a Kill. Remember this one? Eiffel Tower, chopped roof Renault 11, Patrick Macnee in a sunken Rolls, a rather large airship, Golden Gate bridge and an exploding mine. Yep, that’s the one. Grace comes to a rather explosive end and in doing so, saves the world.

Two, back in 1981, Grace Jones took it upon herself to slap chat show legend Russell Harty. Russell’s only crime was asking another guest a few questions. Grace – it was a chat show! It may have been nearly 30 years ago, but it is worth reliving the clip for old times sake.

But both of these pale into insignificance compared to Grace’s role in a bizarre and surreal TV advertisement for the Citroen CX. OK, so we know that in French, Citroen is a direct translation of the word Eccentricity, but this advert takes the company on to a different level. You have to see it to believe it. It begins with an 80 ft Grace Jones spitting out a CX, before Grace embarks on the kind of driving last seen on the Blackbird Leys estate in the mid 80s. It finishes with Grace driving back into her own mouth, before letting off a rather large burp and disappearing down into the desert floor. Grace finishes by proclaiming her love of Dairylea Triangles cheese.

Don’t believe me? Check it out here…

Having seen the ad again after two decades of gathering dust, we can now give Grace a fourth reason for being famous. She’s the only ever driver to get the tyre squealing on sand. Even the A-Team never achieved this. Respect Grace. Respect.

Sadly, I hate to inform you that many episodes of the original Batman TV show featured car chases which ended up in the desert with tyres squealing more than a pig farmers convention.

Fair enough, although Grace won’t be too pleased to lose her accolade. Prepare to be slapped like a Harty!

Also, didn’t BA Baracus manage to achieve tyre squeal on gravel?

I suspect that if you view any 80′s american show with a car chase of some description, tyres can be heard being tortured on any surface, including snow.
